TaeKwonDo For Families
TaeKwonDo is the dynamic Korean Military Art that teaches Self Defense, Self-Developement and Self-Discipline. We are members of the US National TaeKwonDo Association, America's premiere classical TaeKwonDo organization.
TaeKwonDo Can Stir Your Soul!
Many sports and exercise activities are one dimensional. Aerobics is a nice way to stretch and tone your muscles. Jogging offers cardiovascular benefits. Swimming offers more. But TaeKwonDo offers you a way to bring your entire life into harmony through the physical, mental, and philosophical exercise of your mind and body. Taekwondo challenges you physically, exercising virtually every muscle in your body. Your training helps you develop a healthier cardiovascular system, greater strength, better coordination, increased flexibility and, of course, the ability to defend yourself in dangerous situations. TaeKwonDo training also helps you develop a keener ability to confidently make decisions, a higher degree of self respect, and an ability to deal with stress effectively.
TaeKwonDo is a martial art independently developed over 20 centuries ago in Korea. Over many it has had several name changes throughout history. From Soobakdo, to the inclusion of techniques from Karate as portrayed in the movie "Karate Kid", to evolve into its most modern version used by the Korean military since 1955.
At Body Martial Arts of Chattanooga Tennessee we teach the military art self-defense form of TaeKwonDo as created by the modern day founders of TaeKwonDo in the 1940s and 1950s. Body Martial Arts of Chattanooga Tennessee is a member of the U.S. National TaeKwonDo Association. Master Chris Edwards is the Tennessee State Representative for the USNTA.
TaeKwonDo teaches the practitioner techniques for defense and offense. Regardless of age or sex, TaeKwonDo teaches the practitioner to use his / her hands and feet in any defensive situation. TaeKwonDo literally means the "way of kicking and punching". It consists of sharp, strong, angular movements with free flowing circular movements to produce a balance of beauty and power.
With the addition of TaeKwonDo's traditional kicking techniques, it is a complete system of self-defense and personal improvement. All of its activities are based on the defense attitude that was originally developed for protection against enemy attacks.
The most important fact about TaeKwonDo is that it is not only a superior art of self-defense, but of the mind as well. It gives its practitioners self-confidence that provides an advantage over weak opponents. This mental characteristic along with the physical ability is beneficial to the mental life of individuals as well as to their families and friends.
With its practical means of self-defense, its complete regimen of physical conditioning, and its ability to improve concentration and mental performance, TaeKwonDo offers a total fitness program integrating mind, body, and spirit.
TaeKwonDo is one of the most systematic and scientific Korean martial arts, which teaches more than just physical fighting skills. It is a discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our bodies and our minds.
We offer TaeKwonDo training in a Fun, Safe, Family atmosphere for students of all ages. While some organizations concentrate of teaching a sport form of TaeKwonDo to send a few elite athletes to the Olympics every four years, we offer a classical form of TaeKwonDo training and believe that everyone of any age can benefit from TaeKwonDo. Chinese Gung Fu
Chinese Gung Fu taught at Body Martial Arts is eclectic by nature is comprised of Baguazhang, Small Circle Jujitsu, Jeet Kune Do and 5 Animal System.
Sifu Chris Edwards has studied under many teachers throughout the years, but his "Teacher" of Gung fu is Master Jim Hogwood and subsequently his teacher was Grandmaster Tim Warfield. Sifu Chris Edwards teaches the ancient traditions with a vision for the future. Grandmaster Warfield says, "Between the person you are and the person you will be stands the constant challenge". Master Hogwood says, "You must bake your own cake". Sifu Chris Edwards says to cultivate a "true warrior's heart", embodying all these philosophies in his Gung Fu. No one else in the Tennessee Valley area offers what Body Martial Arts can through Chinese Gung Fu's expression of art, personal power, knowledge, challenge, tradition, and evolution of martial arts. Currently Sifu is only accepting Black Belts of other styles, individuals with 5 years experience in the martial arts, dedicated artistic individuals and by expressed personal consent only.
BAGUAZHANG is classified as one of 3 internal styles of kung fu in China (Tai Chi, Hsing I, and Bagua). Baguazhang (8 Trigrams Fist) officially came into formalization in the 19th Century by Dong Haichuan, an expert of other various forms of Kung Fu. He adapted ancient Daoist methods of meditation, chi cultivation and combat strategy to formulate Baguazhang as an official style of Kung Fu.
Baguazhang is known for its "circle walking", elusive footwork, devastating palm strikes, effortless power in throws, and the ability to take on multiple attackers with ease. Soft chi gung breathing and meditation was used throughout training to prepare students for more advanced training and increased health.
One the events in Dong's life that made him famous occurred while working for a Prince in China. He was found carrying a giant tray of hot food throughout a crowd of dignitaries. His movements were so graceful and effortless that his employer asked if he was a martial artist. Dong said he'd had some training, so the Prince made him challenge the current Chief Instructor of his personal bodyguards. Dong defeated him with ease and was named the new Chief Instructor and started to teach his new style, accepting only a few disciples. Study of the ancient Chinese Bagua or "8 Trigrams" symbol for the elements of heaven, earth, lake, mountain, fire, water, wind and thunder relates to strategies for life and martial arts.
Professor Wally Jay formalized SMALL CIRCLE JUJITSU in the 20th Century. After studying Judo, Kodenkan Jujitsu, Boxing, Weightlifting, Aikido and Kung Fu, he developed his theory of "small circle". After taking principles of all of these disciplines, especially classical jujitsu, and through trial and error, Professor Jay felt something was missing.
The circular theories of Judo were actually the catalyst that got the wheels turning. Professor Jay began to realize that the smaller the movements, the more effective the techniques. Also the smaller the circle the more pain went into an opponent and the more control someone had while executing a given technique. Thus spawned the creation of this system. It has been taught to various law enforcement agencies and paramilitary for many years now. Its combat and real world effectiveness speaks for itself.
The late Bruce Lee coined JEET KUNE DO back in the 1960's. It is more a theory of combat then a "style". Bruce Lee was always adamant that "The Way of the Intercepting Fist" was evolutionary by nature, meaning that principles and philosophies were evolutionary by nature. Theory was more important then only technique. A theory can contain hundreds of techniques, each being relevant in a given self-defense situation. Traditionally Jeet Kune Do is comprised of Wing Chun, Fencing, and Boxing. Lee also categorized combat into distance ranges (Kicking, Punching, Trapping, and Grappling). It is very much a "style without style". In all self-defense, Lee taught to flow like water and to be instinctual. Jeet Kune Do was also a forerunner for current day MMA. Lee believed in "cross training" the body with various training methods. He also believed martial arts to be an expression of self.
The FIVE ANIMAL SYSTEM comprised of Snake, Crane, Tiger, Leopard and Dragon was founded over 6 centuries ago in the Shaolin temple. It based on even older principles that the "Great Masters" developed by watching various animals in the wild to see how they fought for survival. Mimicking the various animal movements is only part of the training. Students learn to cultivate each animal's attribute as to how it relates to combat and life. Cultivating power through "becoming" each animal is a rewarding journey that takes many years to obtain. Hard chi gung breathing exercises and meditation cultivates bodily strength, increased internal power and physical vibrancy. Throughout this system, study of the ancient Chinese elements of water, wood, earth, fire and metal will gives powerful visual imagery of what type of energy to develop.
